(Alliance E-News Service) — The 2010 Alliance National Conference, to be held Oct. 20-22 in Milwaukee, will include a number of workshops addressing specific topics related to nonprofit leadership. These sessions will include strategies and tools human service organization leaders can use to act like futurists, while simultaneously being able to successfully respond to everyday challenges.
This workshop will be presented by a father and son who will draw upon their experience as leaders of nonprofit human service organizations. Having directly witnessed the evolution of the sector over the course of previous decades, they will present their perspective on what organizations must do to thrive in the next 10 years. Discussion will specifically address the impact of demographic shifts, advances in technology, and the blurring of sector boundaries.
This workshop will focus on the historical evolution of the role boards have played in nonprofit organizations. The demands and challenges of current times require that organizations be able to respond to changing conditions and opportunities, and that boards adopt a forward-looking, entrepreneurial orientation. Participants will learn how to assist boards in moving in this direction in order to pave the way for future success.
Co-authors of a recent study of youth-serving organizations will share insights on the drivers of growth for youth-serving organizations. The workshop will zero in on key pillars of growth that were identified in the study, and will take attendees through a benchmarking exercise to help them understand their organization’s growth rate relative to that of other similarly sized organizations.
Improved outcomes for those served by the nonprofit sector depend on the quality, stability, and retention of staff who deliver mission-critical services. In addition, organizations must promote succession planning at all levels by strategically identifying and investing in the talents of their managers and emerging leaders. This workshop will teach attendees tips for improving the recruitment, selection, and training of staff. Presenters also will share tips for identifying, assessing, mentoring, and developing emerging leaders.
When something goes awry, nonprofit leaders may find that their energy and resources can quickly become drained in the process of responding. This workshop will provide participants with a framework for identifying risk factors unique to their own organizations. The presenters will draw from a variety of risk assessment tools that can be used to create a risk management program.
When strategic plans fail, it’s most often because there’s a breakdown in the time between planning and implementation. The presenters will share their experiences planning and implementing a five-year strategic plan at Boys Town in Boys Town, Neb. They will articulate how they have applied lessons learned from past failures and successes, as well as engage attendees in discussions about the communication, measurement, and management systems needed to promote successful implementation.
